The Amazing History of DealDash

DealDash.com is truly a success story. It started out small, only one of 300 online auction sites, but after being in business 14 years, today DealDash is the second biggest and longest-running penny-auction shopping site.

Therefore, I decided to write a blog about some of the amazing DealDash history:

  • When and how DealDash got started,
  • How I first learned about DealDash, and
  • The first DealDash TV commercial (that I was in)

How DealDash got started

William Wolfram, as a 16-year-old Finnish entrepreneur, founded DealDash Feb. 22, 2009. After bidding and losing some money on another shopping site, William was devastated to learn he had no way to recover his bids or any of the money he lost.

That’s when Wolfram got the bright idea to start his own similar, but fair and honest, shopping site. To make DealDash different and better than other shopping sites, he decided to:

  1. Make his shopping site 100 percent risk-free to try (by giving all new customers up to 90 days to get all their money back from their first bid pack purchase if they did not win);
  2. Give his customers the ability to reclaim their bids if they did not win (by using his Buy-It-Now option, any customer can get their bids back free to use in another auction);
  3. Make shipping and handling free of charge, and
  4. Make DealDash a fun and entertaining shopping site.

How I first heard about DealDash

I retired from my job as an Army newspaper journalist and editor in April 2009, but I did not start shopping on the DealDash until three years later on Feb. 8, 2012.

I was looking for information for a speech project. As an active member of Toastmasters International (a nonprofit public speaking and leadership organization), I needed to give a speech comparing the pros and cons of more than one service or product. That’s when I got the idea to compare penny-auction sites.

Another penny-auction site kept popping up on my computer, so I thought there must be more than one. I found 300 of them. Of course, that was far too many, so I selected four that appeared near the top of the list. Because of search engines and key words, DealDash was one of them. As I tried them out and took notes, DealDash soon stood out from the other three. BidBuddy was definitely the best automated bidder.

After giving my speech, I decided to do a more in-depth study and sell my report to the CEOs of the companies in exchange for money or a free bid pack. Before rating each company for its customer service, I gave each one a phone call and pretended to be a disgruntled customer. DealDash customer service passed my little test with flying colors for two reasons: First, DealDash made its contact information very easy to find. Second, David O’Weger was the first one I talked with at DealDash and he was so nice and helpful, I could not stay disgruntled for long.

I sent out the same letter to all four of the CEOs of those penny-auction sites, offering to give them a copy of my report in exchange for money or a free bid pack. DealDash was the only one that responded. I was so impressed when I learned Wolfram was the youngest CEO in America when he started the company. I was even more impressed when he actually listened and had the courage to implement some of my most risky ideas. One of my ideas was that he should do a TV commercial.

DealDash’s first commercial

Not long after that, I received a phone call from O’Weger asking me if I wanted to be in their first DealDash TV commercial. At first, a few other customers and I went to NYC, but we did not have the items we won with us. So later on, the first DealDash TV commercial was done in LA at an actual Hollywood studio. That studio had some of the items we won there, and they also had some real actors who were in movies there, including a real Hollywood stunt driver. After we were done making the TV commercial, the stunt driver took me back to the airport. The way he weaved in and out of traffic and stopped the last moment before we were about to crash scared the living daylights out of me. After the crazy ride to the airport, it was the first time I felt safe flying home. What an adventure!

The bottom line

I have been shopping on DealDash.com for more than 10 years. As other long-time, loyal DealDash customers know, many changes have been made since those early days. I believe the years 2012 -2013 were years of tremendous growth for DealDash. I believe its first commercial started airing in early 2013, and it was about that time the company exceeded its first million customers, too.

Now DealDash has more than 20 million customers and they have thousands of auctions every day, 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. The DealDash store never closes, and it will be interesting to see what great successes are yet to come.

Try Shopping on Holidays

Do you know what DealDash shoppers often do on holiday weekends?

Many people put their internet devices down to celebrate with family and friends for BBQs, good food, fun times and fireworks. We should all do that sometimes. That’s great, but it’s especially great for shoppers who do not stop shopping.

I live too far away to get together with family for all holiday celebrations, so to me that means holiday weekends might be the best time of all to enjoy some DealDash shopping. Why? With less competition, we get the opportunity to win some of our best deals yet!

My mother often said, “When the cat’s away, the mice will play.” If we change that quote a bit, we could apply it to DealDash shopping:  “When the most powerful shoppers are away (celebrating), the rest of us can play (and win more deals).”

Holiday shopping definitely gave me a winning edge. I won two bid packs for a small number of bids, so I’m already a happy holiday shopper. Holiday weekends also offer some of the best DealDash features, like bargain prices for bid packs, 3X on the clock and/or the Leaderboard.

Try these strategies too…

Look for auctions that have the lowest number of shoppers who are actively participating.

When the auction gets down to the last three, write down the screen names and look at the Winners’ List for those screen names.  If any of those screen names won an auction within the last three hours, check for the following:

  • Did they win more than they lost?  In other words, did they use more bids to win the auction than they gained from winning the auction?
  • Did they win a product that is worth a large number of bids? If they did an exchange, how many bids would they have to the good?
  • Did any of the final competitors win more than one auction in the last three hours? If so, how many bids would that player have to outbid us?

Perhaps one of the players competing with us lost more than they won, but shows a pattern of consistently overbidding the BIN value of the auction. Under those circumstances, it might be wise for us to stop and invest our bids in a different auction.

If none of our competitors won anything in the last three hours, it might be wise for us to check one more thing.  Do a search for bid packs and write down the screen names of everyone who won a large bid pack in the last four months. Players, who won a 9,000 bid pack, a 7,474 bid pack, a 2,104 bid pack, or a 1,776 bid pack, cannot win it again. However, players who won one or more of those large bid packs will most likely still have a lot of bidding power.

Another thing to check is the date other players started shopping on DealDash. If the shopper is a newbie or an experienced shopper it can make a significant difference if we choose to cancel our bids or to add more.

The bottom line

No doubt, some wealthy power players on DealDash have loads of bids and are only here to have fun. Regardless, if we take all of the things I mentioned into consideration, we will play smart and save a lot of bids.

DealDash and the BBB: A great rating

Did you know DealDash.com is an Accredited Business with an “A” rating from the Better Business Bureau? Anyone can check it out. The BBB ratings run from A+ (highest) to F (lowest).

Now why is that important? For one thing, no business receives such a high rating without “earning” it. Therefore, this “A” rating by the BBB should give DealDash customers the confidence to know that DealDash is indeed a fair and honest penny-auction shopping site.

According to the BBB, “ratings represent the BBB’s opinion of how the business is likely to interact with its customers,” and DealDash has always excelled in customer service. In fact, DealDash provides the best customer service I have ever received.

According to the BBB, its rating is also based on information they obtain about the business, including complaints received from the public. In other words, the BBB not only uses information directly from businesses, but they also use information they get from public data sources.

Information found on public data sources is where even the best companies in the world might have some of its greatest challenges. Why? We cannot believe all of the information we see on various public sources because it can be misleading or just plain wrong. Whenever that happens it reminds me of something my mother said, “You can have a basket full of beautiful, delicious red apples, but all it takes is one bad apple to spoil the whole bunch.” This quote substantiates the human condition that a few people just like to complain and are never satisfied with anything.

Likewise, the large majority of happy and satisfied DealDash customers write positive reviews on these public data sites. However, all it takes is a single complaint to confuse or discourage new customers. Compared to the large number of customers DealDash serves, the number of complaints is low and they usually come from players who never learned how to play. That hardly seems fair, does it?  That’s why I don’t like to see any company receive an unfair negative review in a public forum.

Based on an average of 377 Customer Reviews, the BBB gave DealDash a 4.02 out of a possible 5 stars. That isn’t bad. In fact, it’s very good. But if the truth were known about the unfair negative reviews, DealDash would most likely receive an even higher or perfect 5-star rating.

What do I base this assumption on? Well, I’ve read some of the complaints posted, and as a long-time DealDash customer, it’s obvious to me that nearly all of the complaints have nothing to do with anything the company did wrong. Instead, it had everything to do with new shoppers who started playing before they learned how to play. Most of us have seen shoppers like that – those who bid every other one because they do not yet know how to use BidBuddy. DealDash has done everything possible to help new customers learn how to play smart. They even provide a practice video to help new customers get started.

One of my favorite quotes by poet John Lydgate (later adapted by President Abraham Lincoln) explains this phenomenon very well. Lydgate wrote, “You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time.” In spite of the fact it’s an impossible feat to accomplish, DealDash continuously strives to “please all of the people all of the time.” LOL!

DealDash has now been in business 14 years, and no company stays in business that long unless they are doing a lot of things right.

Informed shoppers who learn how to play smart are usually happy and satisfied customers who win plenty of auctions. But if you never learned how to play smart, please do not blame the company. Instead of writing an unfair negative review, do the right thing and reach out to customer service. If you do that, you can soon become a happy and satisfied customer, too.
