A brief History of Earrings
According to my research, earrings have remained popular for more than 7,000 years, and originated in ancient Asia. Egyptians once wore earrings to signify that they were wealthy or of a higher class, and the British Museum has gold earrings from Egypt that date back to the 19th Dynasty (1200 to 1186 BC). However, in ancient Rome, earrings were worn only by slaves. Ancient Sumerian women’s earrings are the earliest earrings archaeologists have discovered and are typically gold hoops.
The earlobe is associated with financial stability and social status, and through the years earrings became a symbol of womanhood and a sign of identification. More than that, however, in the ancient worlds, it was believed that the spirits enter a human body by way of one’s ears. Therefore, during this period, earrings were worn primarily for the purpose of protecting oneself from the destructive spirits and energies. To many women today no outfit is complete without a pair of beautiful earrings.
The tradition of ear piercing started about 5,000 years ago and was traced back to Europe’s oldest mummy named Otzi, who was found on the border between Austria and Italy with her ears pierced.
During the hippy movement in the late 1960s, men started wearing earrings as a symbol of rebellion and non-conformism. In the 1980s guys who wore an earring in the right ear meant the wearer was a homosexual, and a guy who wore an earring in the left ear meant the wearer was straight.
Each wearer, like other accessories, selects the style of earrings they prefer – studs or dangly earrings, hoops or even tunnels. It’s an individual choice. The heavier the earring, the more likely the ears are to sag. Ear sagging happens over time and occurs in women who frequently wear heavy earrings. The thickness of the wearer’s ear lobe also determines how heavier earrings will affect the individual.
